I did this sketch a while ago with a 0.5mm ink pen (and a lot of time to do the dots!). It's quite a painstaking process, but it does give a very good effect.

I love doing free-hand sketches with marker pens. They are thick and you can block in shaded areas very fast. Here's one I just did of Spider-man. You still have the construction lines there but, it looks fine.
